The Donkeys of Baja

Trailer: Coming Soon

An investigative documentary about the donkeys of Baja California Sur that provides a foundation for public dialogue, informs policy discussions, and contributes to the development of a long-term research and conservation initiative.

About

Once a vital part of rural life in Baja California Sur, donkeys were essential pack and work animals. As industrialization reshaped agriculture and transport, their role disappeared. Many donkeys were left behind and live today abandoned or feral across the region.

Through the voices of local farmers, sanctuaries, government officials, and researchers, the documentary takes a closer look at the donkeys of Baja California Sur and explores how climate pressure, illegal exploitation, tourism, and changing land use are reshaping the fate of an animal that remains culturally significant yet largely unmanaged.

Why this story matters

Why this Story matters

Donkey Situation in Baja California Sur

In Mexico, the donkey still carries strong cultural and emotional meaning, rooted in history and collective memory.

Many believe their population has declined to the point that they are at risk of extinction, yet no reliable population data exists to confirm this claim. The absence of coordinated research and monitoring prevents effective legislation or protection measures.

As a result, their situation remains largely unseen, despite growing public concern about their survival and calls for action.

We want to create a positive impact

The documentary aims to raise awareness of the current situation of donkeys in Baja California Sur and support concrete research and conservation measures based on its findings.

These may include educational signage and outreach, feeding and watering stations, and applied research or monitoring programs developed in collaboration with local partners.

The film is designed to provide a factual foundation for informed dialogue and coordinated action around donkey welfare in the region.
